Professor Van Deelen is the Faculty Advisor of the International Division and Nelson Institute exploration of engagement in Botswana and the faculty advisor for a U.S. Embassy funded project focusing on community based natural resource management capacity building in partnership with the Okavango Research Institute and the Botswana Wildlife Training Institute in the Ministry Environment and Tourism. As the faculty advisor, he helps facilitate discussions between the UW team and partner interlocutors, as well as fostering relationships among the different people involved in the partnership.  In addition, his scholarship specializes in conservation and management of large mammals and mammal communities in the Great Lakes region. Specifically, population dynamics, species movement, predator-prey interactions, and chronic wasting disease.
